Swan-Ganz catheter

Illustrations for a review article

A short while ago, Inge Bootsma approached me about the creation of a series of illustrations for a review article she was writing about the clinical applications of a Swan-Ganz catheter for her PhD research. I love anything to do with the human heart so I was thrilled to take the project on. We discussed the scope of the project and worked out all the details and the preferred style of the images, which was clean without distracting details. Then the fun part began and I started making sketches. Some of these initial sketches are shown below.
Usually when sketching, some additional questions regarding the topic will arise. Once the sketches were made, we discussed them and when all feedback was gathered and all my questions were answered I made a rough first version of the illustrations. Then, there were a few extra feedback rounds to get the details sorted.
The article and the illustrations were then send off to the Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing. A few minor revisions were needed for the illustrations, as well as an additional illustration for the first part of the article. The article was to be published in two parts and a new illustration was also needed for the second part of the article.
The revisions were made and the article and the illustrations were sent off to the journal again. A few additional adjustments to the article and the illustrations were needed, which were made. Et voilà, the articles were ready to publish. The first part of the article is already published. Click on the button below to read the review. Or have a glance at the final images below.
