This sculpture was made as an assignment for one of the modules of the MSc Medical Art. Its objective was to create an anatomical wax model of the head and neck section with educational value.

 

My aim was to create an anatomically correct wax model that would show the pathways of the branches of the facial nerve in an interactive and fun way. Depicting the branches of the facial nerve in a way that engages people with the model and stimulates to study the nerves.

 

The actual wax modelling was done with a plastic skull as base. LED light wire strings were inserted and modelled to represent the different branches of the facial nerve. The wiring was hidden in the neck of the sculpture and a control panel was created in the stand of the model. This makes it possible to switch the branches on and off seperately.

Upon finishing the model, photographs were taken of the different branches lighting up. The model was also scanned, using Artec EVA, a portable 3D color scanner. Zbrush was then used to further modify the scans and the resulting model was uploaded to Sketchfab and annotated.
